bio

My name is Don Daniëls. I was born into a family that gave me all the space I needed for early exploration of our world. Ever since I was a little child I have put question marks behind every mechanism and product that passed through my hands.

This kinesthetic learning resulted in a vast collection of practical- and logical knowledge I now put into practice throughout my student career. First on a vocational education level as a mechanical engineer at ROC Mondriaan in The Hague and later as a student product designer on a university level at the University of Applied Science in The Hague.

Next to designing products and thinking about those workings I also enjoy studying languages, tinkering and being outdoors.

/05

Hobbies

In my spare time I enjoy my hobbies

Sketching
3D printing
Drone flying
Camping
Drawing
Bushcrafting
Being outdoors
Learning languages

methodology

To prevent unforeseen costs and to maintain order and oversight during the design process I utilize the IPO design methodology.

Start up phase

1 week

In the first week(s) of a project I need to get briefed on the problem. Here I will assess the size of project, the viability, the requirements and the nice-to-haves of a client.

/01
Analyzing phase

2 - 4 weeks

After getting briefed about the project I will start to analyze the subject and problems that need to be solved. I will use various tools to get a clear picture of all these potential problems. I mostly work pragmatically

/02
Ideation phase

2 - 4 weeks

When all problems have been mapped out, I will make sketches to look for a solution to these problems.

/03
Conceptualization phase

1 - 3 weeks

After choosing promising idea sketches I evolve these to more viable concept models.

/04
Materialization phase

1 - 2 weeks

Having chosen a viable and promising concept with the client I will now focus more on the materialisation of the design and thus its producibility.

/05
Optimization phase

1 - 2 weeks

As a final step I optimize the design to work out any problems or wishes from the client post materialization.

Strengths

Look & feel

/01

THE FIRST THING A USER WILL NOTICE IS WHAT A PRODUCT LOOKS LIKE, I ENSURE MY DESIGNS FIT INTO THE STYLE OF THE TARGET AUDIENCE.

Skills
HAND SKETCHING
MAKING PHYSICAL VISUAL MODELS
DIGITAL SKETCHING
MAKING DIGITAL VISUAL MODELS
IDEA GENERATION
ABILITY TO MERGE DESIRED IDEA ELEMENTS

Functionality

/02

NEXT TO BEING ABLE TO ANSWER TO A CLIENTS DEMANDS ON A PRODUCTS' LOOK & FEEL, I CAN ALSO ENSURE A PRODUCT HAS OPTIMAL FUNCTIONALITY FOR ITS INTENDED USE.

Skills
QUICK SITUATIONAL ASSESSMENT
INNOVATIVE FUNCTIONALITY IDEA GENERATION
BROAD KNOWLEDGE ABOUT EXISTING PRODUCT FUNCTIONS
REALISTIC FUNCTIONALITY IDEA GENERATION
ABILITY TO CLEARLY PICTURE THE USER ENVIRIONMENT
-

Producibility

/03

A VIABLE PRODUCT MUST ALSO BE PRODUCIBLE, HENCE THE IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRATED PRODUCT DESIGN. I AM ABLE TO TAKE THE PRODUCIBILITY AND IT'S CONSIDERATIONS OF A DESIGN INTO ACCOUNT AT A VERY EARLY STAGE IN THE DESIGN PROCESS.

Skills
CONSIDERING PRODUCIBILITY AT AN EARLY STAGE
UNDERSTANDING THE RELATION BETWEEN COSTPRICE AND MANUFACTURING
BROAD KNOWLEDGE ABOUT MANUFACTURING PROCESSES
-
REALISTIC PRODUCIBILITY ASESSMENT
-

Practical knowlegde

/04

PRIOR TO MY STUDIES AS A PRODUCT DESIGN ENGINEER I STUDIED MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT A VOCATIONAL LEVEL. HERE I GAINED A LOT OF HANDS ON PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PRODUCTS AND THE ASSEMBLY AND MANUFACTURING THEREOF.

Skills
TAKING PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF A DESIGN INTO ACCOUNT
OPERATING  MILL AND LATHE
DELIVERING HIGH QUALITY AND USABLE PROTOTYPES
PRACTICAL MECHANICAL WORKING EXPERIENCE
MIG WELDING
Knowledge about materials
